THE GREAT BARRIER REEF The largest living reef system on the planet.
Placed on the World Heritage List in 1981.
The Great Barrier Reef was placed on the World Heritage List because
of its outstanding natural universal values:
as an outstanding example of the major stages
in the earth’s evolutionary history;
as an outstanding example of ecology and biology;
as an example of natural phenomena; and
containing important habitats for conservation
of biological diversity.
The reef also is one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
